I received this product recently and I can honestly say that there is no other GPS in the market that even comes close to what the TN765t does. The widescreen display give me more to view, the interface is amazing, and it has super helpful features like traffic, Google search, and Bing for things like stock quotes and sports scores.

The first thing you’ll notice when you start up the unit is the amazing brightness and clarity of the 5.1 widescreen. There’s no other display like it in the industry – it reminds me more of a the graphics you see on the iPhone than, say, on a 1980’s video game console. The display projects amazing clarity for items such as 3D buildings, so when you’re driving through a city, the actual buildings are visible on the screen. Or..if you’re driving through the mountains, as I was recently, the physical dimensions of the mountain tops are actually displayed as you drive. I’ve never seen anything else like this.

The interface is completely different than any other GPS I’ve seen. It has sliding panels that you can keep out as you drive, or make disappear. The panels show things like upcoming traffic, points of interest, or a birds eye areal view your drive. For searching, just tap the center of the screen and type the address..all in one place, and it finds it for you. Or, press the Google button and it searches Google on the internet to find your location. So there’s no limit to the amount of places this thing stores!

But by far the coolest feature is that it actually reads you your text messages! While I was driving my wife texted me, and the message actually appeared on the screen (you must be connected via bluetooth) – and the unit actually read the message to me! If that’s not all, it gave me an option to respond from a menu of preloaded responses. I selected “I’m driving, I’ll call you back” by pressing the menu choice on the screen and that exact text message was sent back to my wife. Unbelievable!!!

And if that’s not all…it uploads your phone book from your mobile phone and you can actually call your friends by talking to the GPS. Just press the voice recognition button and say “Call contact…John Smith” and it will make the call and project the call through it’s very loud speakerphone.

There’s no doubt this is a high end device – at $329.99, it’s not for everyone. But if you’re looking for the best technology available – this is definitely it. Highly recommended!

The first time you use an Android phone, one thing becomes immediately clear: You’re not in Cupertino anymore.

Android, as recent Verizon commercials remind us, is the antithesis of Apple’s celebrated handset: It’s open source, fully customizable, and free from unexplained app rejections. If the iPhone is Apple’s inalterable masterpiece, the Android platform is Google’s open canvas. The palette is in your hands; it’s up to you to add color.

We’ve assembled 40 tips and tricks to help you make the most of your Android phone. Some are specific to Android 2.0 or later, but most apply to any Android-based device. And not one of these tricks requires you to jailbreak anything.

So grab your phone, and get started–it’s time for you to become a certified Android master.

Optimize Your Home Screen

1. Make the most of your space by using widgets–dynamic programs that operate right on your home screen. Simply hold your finger on any open space, and then select Widgets from the pop-up menu. Widgets come in a huge variety of sizes and functions, so search the Android Market to find what works for you.

2. Prefer not to be bothered by a sound every time an e-mail arrives? Head into Gmail’s Settings menu and set its ringtone to Silent. You’ll still see new-message alerts in the notification panel at the top of your screen, and you can always pull the panel down to get detailed information. You can configure text messaging and other alert-generating apps the same way.

3. Set up one-touch dialing for the people you call the most. Hold your finger on an open space and select Shortcuts. Then, touch Direct dial and pick the person from your contact list. If one-touch texting is what you crave, use the Direct message option instead.

4. To drop your favorite Web pages onto your home screen, long-press on any site in your browser’s bookmarks and then select the Add shortcut to home option.

5. Try using folders to keep your home screen organized. Long-press on a blank space and select Folders to create one. You can then drag and drop frequently used contacts, apps, or other shortcuts into it to cut down on clutter. To rename a folder, press and hold the folder’s title bar while it’s open.

6. Make file management a snap with a utility such as Astro, which allows you to browse through your phone just as you would a computer, navigating directories and moving or deleting files at will.

7. Need to cut and paste text? Long-press on any text input area. If you’re on a Web page, tap the Menu key and use the Select text option.

8. Use Android’s hotkeys to do everything from zooming in to a Web page to opening a program. Check out our complete list of Android keyboard shortcuts to learn them all.

9. You can set your own hotkeys to open apps, too. Head into the main Settings menu, select Applications, and then choose Quick Launch to get started.

10. If the on-screen keyboard pops up when you don’t want it, touch it and swipe downward to make it disappear.

11. You can see the current date at any time by touching your finger to the top-left corner of the screen.

12. To load files onto your Android phone, plug the handset into your PC and pull down the notification panel. Tap the USB connected box, and then tap Mount when the confirmation dialog box appears. 16. Stay up to speed with your feeds with the help of NewsRob, a handy app that syncs your phone with your Google Reader account.

17. Want to have your PC’s browser bookmarks on your Android phone? Download MyBookmarks from the Market to import them.

Power Up Your Phone

18. Get extra calling power by integrating Google Voice into your phone. Once you’ve signed up for an account, download the official app and watch your options expand. Bonus tip: Add the Google Voice widget to your home screen for one-touch toggling of your outgoing-call preferences.

19. You can send text messages for free through Google Voice–everything you need is in the app. Just make sure you change the settings to refresh every 5 minutes so that incoming messages won’t be delayed. If you want faster notifications, log in to the Google Voice Website and configure your account to send you e-mail alerts when a new text arrives.

20. Get unbilled talk time by using Fring, a free mobile chat client for Android. Fring lets you make calls over Google Talk, Skype, and any SIP calling service.

21. Cut down on calling headaches by using the free Dial Zero app to call the companies you do business with. It lets you bypass annoying phone trees and get right to human representatives.

22. Keep annoying callers away by routing them directly to your voicemail. First, open the offending person’s profile in your contacts list. Then, press the Menu button, tap Options, and check the Incoming calls box.

23. The Incoming Calls screen also holds the option for setting custom ringtones for callers. Tap Ringtone and change each person’s tune as you wish.

24. Want to use your own MP3 files as ringtones? No problem: Make a new folder on your memory card and name it ringtones. Copy your MP3s there, and they will automatically show up in your selection list. Folders called alarms or notifications will do the same thing for those respective functions.

25. Check out the free app RingDroid. With it, you can easily edit an MP3 file to grab a precise segment of a song for a ringtone or system sound.

26. Android lets you keep multiple browser windows open at the same time. Long-press any Web link to open it in a new window. Tap the Menu key while in the browser to toggle between windows.

27. Prefer seeing Web pages in landscape mode? You can tell Android to always display sites that way. Select the Landscape-only display checkbox in the browser’s Settings menu.

28. Android’s built-in browser isn’t your only option. Try Dolphin Browser for cool features such as tabbed browsing, gesture-driven commands, and multitouch zooming (yes, even on the Droid).

Secure Your Smartphone

29. Android includes an option to use simple patterns to secure your phone; to unlock the handset, you swipe your finger across the screen in a specific pattern. Look for Screen Unlock Pattern under ‘Location and Security’ in the main System Settings menu.

30. Want to back up your phone’s data? Try MyBackup, which saves your apps, contacts, call logs, texts, and even settings to either your SD Card or a secure Internet server. You might also like SMS Backup, which periodically saves all of your texts into your Gmail account.

31. For even more protection, download Mobile Defense. The app allows you to use a PC to track your phone via GPS, remotely lock it, and then back up and wipe all of your data.

34. If basic note-taking is all you need, download a PC-synced notepad such as GDocs Notepad With Sync. It saves documents directly into your Google Docs account for easy access.

35. For on-the-go photo editing, Adobe’s Photoshop.com Mobile app is tough to beat–and it’s free, too.

36. Jazz up your Android music experience with TuneWiki, which automatically finds and scrolls lyrics next to your songs as they play. Plus, it gives you access to Internet radio streaming and some cool community-sharing features.

Customize Your Phone Completely

37. Adjust how your phone acts by using Locale. The app lets you set custom profiles for practically any circumstance–having your ringer shift to silent when you’re at work, for example, or making your screen glow brighter at night.

38. Take full advantage of your phone’s LED by installing Missed Call, which configures your phone’s light to flash specific colors when calls from certain people slip by.

39. Edit Android’s custom dictionary to include your name and other proper nouns. That way, they’ll pop up in the auto-complete list as you type. Look under Language and keyboard settings in System Settings to get started.

40. If you try an Android app and decide that you don’t like it, return it. The Android Market will give you a full refund for up to 24 hours after any purchase, provided that you haven’t tried to return the same app before.

My dad busted his cell phone a few weeks back (or so we thought.. more on this later) and we needed to get him a quick, cheap phone. After searching everywhere we picked out the MotoFone F3 from Motorola. We got it new for $30.00 from E-Bay.

MotoFone F3

I would recommend this phone to anyone who needs a cheap but sturdy phone for everyday use. It would also be a wonderful phone for parents to give kids because of the simplistic nature of the phone. There’s no web, no pictures, and it’s even hard to send/receive text messages.

The MotoFone is very very durable and uses an E-Ink display that doesn’t use any glass. This means you can drop it, step on it, and nothing happens outside of a few scratches.

The aesthetics of this phone are not bad, it looks like a Motorola SLVR. I actually have the L9 and love it for the camera and high res screen. The F3 on the other hand does not have a camera and only has a monochrome screen. While using the phones most onlookers would not be able to tell the difference.

Let’s not forget the E-Ink display that maximizes the battery life and is very easy to read in nearly any light (indiglow backlight).. Construction of the phone is good, call quality is better than I expected too. I give this phone 2 thumbs up and my dad loves it. So if you’ve got a child,parent, or just don’t feel like having all the bells & whistles then this phone is a smash hit!

Awe, my first phone. It was an upgraded Christmas gift when I turned sixteen. I initially received a VCR to accompany the 13-inch television I got for my birthday a few weeks before. This phone revolutionized the market for personal mobile devices, and finally made it accessible to a wider range of customers than ever before. We all remember the parodies in sitcoms with the enormous grey cellular phones, heavy and about the size of the original Nintendo Gameboy. Finally there was a compact and portable option for those who wanted to look stylish, important, and tech-savvy. This was a fantastic first phone for me. It’s no-frills, self-explanatory (though I still can’t figure out for the life of me how the logic game works…irony), and customizable. I had two favourite faceplates which I alternated between – a white one with frogs and a shimmering colour-shifting gold-to-fuschia (which reminded me of a sunset). I later was stuck with this phone when my Vbox died. My parents had one until the analog network was phased out and they were forced to upgrade. Just saying. Though the battery life was incredibly exaggerated. Nokia claimed that you could potentially survive eleven days without recharging, whereas overall experience would suggest maybe eleven hours. I’d wager that the charge memory on the battery dropped by about 80% within the first year. My parents’ phone was always charged into the cigarette lighter in the car.

Rooting and Modding my Droid

On Super Bowl Sunday while waiting for the big game to start I was bored out of my mind. Who gives a crap about all the pregame crap? I decided to take the plunge and root my phone. After a month of reading posts on forums like Alldroid, and Howards Forum I decided to go with SholesMod (now DroidMod). Thinking back, Rooting my Droid after drinking a few beers wasn’t the brightest idea but what the fuck. I followed all the instructions and watched as my phone scrolled through all the command prompts. I have to say, the process was painless and pretty fool proof. Now I’m not saying go ahead root your phone, nothing wrong can happen but it worked flawlessly. In a matter of minutes I was rooted and overclocked. Since that time I have unrooted and rerooted my device. Added Theme Rom overlays from Krazykrivda at Alldroid and used Metamorph as well. I have found the DroidMod theme to be stable but I am now getting ready to try out Cyanogen Sholes Mod. I’ll let you know how that goes in a few weeks. Until then, I highly recommend checking out DroidMod, at your own risk.

The TiVo Premiere & Why It Won't Work

So last week, after a 3 year wait, TiVo FINALLY announced a new product offering in the way of the TiVo Premiere and the Premiere XL. The problem is that it presents very little in the way of innovation.

I think most people agree that cable company DVR’s are horrible. I was an avid TiVo subscriber from the initial launch. The smooth user interface, great remote and features such as season passes were amazing. The cable company DVR’s leave a lot to be desired. However, they are essentially free and the user experience continues to get better. I currently pay $11.95 for a Comcast Motorola HD dual-tuner DVR. That’s it. No cost for the box, just $11.95 a month. The TiVo Premiere requires a $299-$499 (depending on hard drive size) investment for the box, a $13.95 monthly service fee AND you still need to rent a cable card from your service provider to obtain HD content on it for about $7 a month. Not to mention that you have no access to your cable companies OnDemand programming when using a TiVo.

Another thing that threw me off about the new TiVo box is its lack of wireless networking. What?! Do people actually still use home landline telephone service? Yes, there is a wireless adapter available for an additional $100.00. That brings your initial out-of-pocket costs to right around $600.00, and that is before any monthly service fees!

TiVo does have several things going for it. First, they just announced this beautiful new remote. It features bluetooth and a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Anyone who has done a search on any DVR can instantly recognize the beauty of this. But get this, it is not included in the box! The price has not been announced yet, but I’m guessing it will be in the $100.00 range. That just brought your total to $700.00. You could buy a car for that much money, or an iPad, or groceries for half a year!

The new TiVo Premiere interface. The new box provides support for Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand. Well, so did the old TiVo boxes. Nothing new here, except that they make it a bit more apparent. Honestly, I don’t see myself using these features a whole lot. I prefer the iTunes store on my Apple TV over Amazon’s offerings and until Netflix offers me more that a few obscure documentaries and B-Movies for viewing on demand, that is a lost cause as well.

Yes, TiVo is slick, beautiful, well functioning and somewhat innovative but they just cannot compete on the pricing field. Comcast is currently offering DVR boxes running the TiVo software in several test markets and I dream of the day when that program rolls out nationally. For now the price and lack of OnDemand access limit what this, or any other TiVo product will be able to achieve.

Survey: Cellphone Music, Web Access Rising Along With Smartphone Use

Reston, Va. – More people owned smartphones, listened to cellphone-stored music, and used their phone to access a social-networking site during the three months ending in January compared with the previous three months, a ComScore consumer survey found.

The survey also found that Research In Motion (RIM) increased its leading share of smartphone users during the period, although Google’s share of users rose the most. Apple’s share was almost flat.

The online survey of people ages 13 and older also found that Motorola leads in the number of consumers using its handsets, although that lead slipped sequentially during the latest three-month period.

For its monthly online surveys, ComScore polls more than 30,000 consumers, with a new sample surveyed every month. The company’s report, based on a three-month average, includes employer-issued phones as long as the phone was the respondent’s primary phone. For the latest three-month period, ComScore determined that 234 million Americans ages 13 and older were cellphone subscribers and that 22.9 percent of them used a Motorola phone (down 1.2 percentage points). LG ranked second in share of users at 21.7 percent (down 0.3 points), followed by Samsung with 21.1 percent (up 0.1 points), Nokia with 9.1 percent (down 0.2 points) and RIM with 7.8 percent (up 1.4 points). The relative brand ranks did not differ from the previous quarter’s ranks.

In another finding based on the surveys, ComScore determined an average 42.7 million people (or 18 percent of total cellphone subscribers) used a smartphone during the three-month period, up 18 percent from the previous three months. RIM extended its smartphone-share lead to 43 percent of all smartphone users, up 1.7 percentage points from the previous quarter. Apple ranked second with 25.1 percent share (up 0.3 percentage points), followed by Microsoft with 15.7 percent share (down 4 percentage points), Google with 7.1 percent (up 4.3 percentage points), and Palm with 5.7 percent (down 2.1 percent).

On average during the latest three-month period, 12.8 percent of phone users listened to cellphone-stored music (up 1.2 percentage points sequentially), 17.1 percent accessed a social-network site or blog (up 3.3 points), 19.8 percent used a downloaded app (up 1.5 points), 21.7 percent played cellphone-stored games (up 0.4 points), 28.6 percent used the phone’s browser (up 1.8 points), and 63.5 percent sent a text message (up 1.5 points).

Old W755 and the new Droid

What is in the blurry picture to the left is my old Motorola W755 cell phone and my new Motorola Droid. In the past several months I had pretty much ignored my W755. As a phone it was decent enough. However when I wasn’t in a location where I could be reached via a land line I was often conversing with people via IM or Facebook more than phone. So when our contract with Verizon was up and they bribed us with new free phones I look more towards the smart phones than a replacement simple phone. I decided to get a Droid partly because of the geek factor but largely because it had the latest Android OS and a hardware keyboard. My wife also got one because it was Buy-One-Get-One free even though she was eying the Blackberry Curve (because it was lavender!).

It arrived yesterday. I was expecting for it to be a fun little gadget but in the first 24 hours it has completely blown away any expectations I had for it. Here’s a short list of things I’ve done since getting it activated (which was a chore, but not because of the phone).

Configured it so that it uses my WiFi for data when in the house. Even though we have unlimited data on the phone this provides a nice speed boost.
Downloaded an App for playing Pandora. Within 10 minutes of activation I had Within Temptation streaming to my phone. Nice!
Set up my Facebook account with the built in app. Found it to be quite nice and let my Facebook friends know the Droid was live.
Played around with Google Maps and cackled with glee as the on-board GPS was identifying where I was inside my house.
Found an app to measure the strengths of local WiFi signals. Found out they are all on channel 6, including mine. Which means pretty soon I’ll be bumping mine to 11.
Configured built-in email app to use my personal email that I run. Finally found a reason to allow SMTP time authentication.
Imported all my contacts… from Facebook. I only had to add a few numbers from my W755.
Plugged my Droid into my Dell Mini. Got it to be recognized as a USB drive by the Mini. Copied Within Temptation’s “The Silent Force” onto my Droid. Started playing it shortly thereafter. Not too bad considering I ripped the CD to OGG and not MP3. Take that, iPod Nano!
Installed Seesmic, test tweeted, worked perfectly.
VNCed into my Linux server and manipulated the torrents running there.
Found an application, Layar, which tales GPS and tilt coordinates and overlays a layer on top of the picture from the camera. This layer superimposes data from different sources. The first one I checked? Tweets with geoloc. What I found? My neighbor across the street and 3 houses down was looking for someone to split the cost of Carrie Underwood tickets. She tweeted right about the time I had installed the app.

I am simply agog at all I have been able to do with this little machine. It’s more a mini-computer that happens to be a phone. The interface is quite intuitive and dead sexy. The best part is that it replaces several pieces of gear.

While my wife’s Cannon PC1355 has better picture quality the camera in the Droid easily beats what my W755 had for on-the-spot quick pics where spontaneity is more important than quality.
Aside from DRM enabled tracks the Droid can replace my Nano. Heck, it does Ogg which means I can dump all my duplicate MP3s. While I am not happy that I can’t strip the DRM from the iTunes tracks I legally purchased I’d rather have to repurchase those tracks than have to forgo ripping to Ogg.
On-the-go Youtube & Pandora platform. Be even better if Hulu and Netflix worked, too, but I ain’t complaining.
Facebook, Twitter, IM and email on-the-go.
Oh, and it’s a phone…

When we were going to order the phones my wife was worried that this would be as used as the W755. I think it is safe to say with all it can do that the chances of that are quite low.

Google's Nexus 2?!? Already?!?

It seems that rumors of a sibling for the Google Nexus One, called Nexus Two, is more than likely to be the Motorola Shadow.

Last week, Motorola’s CEO had spilled the beans and confirmed that they were developing a new smartphone with Google. So it comes as no surprise that the Motorola Shadow, with its QWERTY keyboard and huge touchscreen, is the highly talked about Nexus Two.

Based on leaked images from a popular overseas forum, the Motorola Shadow is 9mm thick and equipped with a massive 4.3 inch touchscreen, with 750 x 484 pixels of hotness!!! The leaked images also show a HDMI port. BOOYA! Furthermore, sources speculate that it will come with an 8MP camera with the ability for video recording in 1080p. THANK YOU JESUS!

A quick look at the image of the Motorola Shadow shows a sliding QWERTY keypad, wrist-strap nook and white based cladding with touches of red trimming.

The operating system chosen is still not confirmed, but being the Google Nexus Two we would assume Android 2.1, and not Froyo as it is being suggested on a few forums. DUH!

Expect the Google Nexus Two, aka Motorola Shadow release date to be slated for March. And for those readers who are planning to browse the web for more information on the Shadow, I suggest you also try looking for it by its other name, the Motorola Mirage.

Will a Cloud-Based Android Interface Fragment the Platform?

HipLogic today launched an Android (s goog) platform that makes it easy for handset OEMs and carriers to produce custom interfaces for their phones. Fremont, Calif.-based HipLogic’s interface is always connected to the cloud, meaning operators can change the Android home screen interface whenever desired. Updates are delivered to the customer’s phone over the air, courtesy of the “always connected” nature of the HipLogic interface.

Companies are always happy to differentiate their products when using an open platform such as Android, but there is a risk such a move can further fragment the Android user experience. We already see this happening on HTC phones with its Sense interface, and the MOTOBLUR interface by Motorola (s mot) dilutes the Android experience in a way, too. It’s not necessarily a bad thing that many Android phones have different interface features, but it makes it harder for consumers to determine which interface components are standard and which are special to a given handset.

“Android is a simple platform and we will develop lots of applications for our users,” said Yu Mingduo, CFO of Mediatek, Taiwan’s biggest semiconductor designer, adding that the company will offer its Android solution in mid 2010.

Although Mediatek and Microsoft will jointly release Windows Mobile 6.5, market feedback showed that the limited popularity of Mediatek’s Windows Mobile solution was worrying.

HTC, a major Windows Mobile-based cell phone manufacturer, became a stock leader in Taiwan thanks to the hot sales of Windows Mobile-based products. This was one major reason why Mediatek chose Windows Mobile platform. Meanwhile, Windows Mobile was much more mature compared with Google’s Android.

However, one year later, promoted by leading cell phone makers including Samsung, HTC, LG and Motorola, Android-based cell phone seems more like a pioneer.

“Motorola will release at least 20 Android-powered cell phones in 2010, and bring the price of Android devices to below 2,000 yuan (around 293 U.S. dollars),” said an official with Motorola China, adding that before Microsoft release its Windows Mobile 7, all the company’s mid-to-high end cell-phones will be Android-powered.

Currently, Android has over 20,000 apps. That figure was only a little higher than 10,000 last September, and has been growing at a speed of 4,000 per month.

Mediatek turned to Android not only because of customers’ preference, but because the company will be able to copy iPhone’s operation mode with the help of Android OS.

With Android, Mediatek can establish its online application store more easily, said Yu.

China is expected to have much more 3G users in 2010, and cell phones customized by telecom operators will enter the mainstream. China’s three mobile operators, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, have all okayed Android-powered cell phones.

Mediatek will employ 1,000 R&D staff in 2010, and most of them will focus on cell phones, said Yu.

We knew Android 2.1 was coming for the Droid, but we’ll confess — we didn’t expect it to come this soon. Motorola is now reporting via its official Facebook page that it’s "happy to relay the 2.1 upgrade to Droid will start to roll out this week," going on to tease that it "will have more information to share on other device upgrades later." There’s no detail on what the Droid update will entail or whether it’ll roll out to every user this week (we doubt it), but by all indications, this is a promising sign that Moto’s keeping the pedal to the metal, we’d say.

Motorola Devour with Motoblur finally official

Verizon announced today, the arrival of the first Motoblur device on their CDMA network. The Motorola Devour. The phone has a really futuristic design similar to that of the Droid but in a smaller, lighter colored, and to some, a sleeker design. The Devour is set to launch sometime next month with no mentioned price. With the Eris being $99.99 and the Droid being $199.99, my guess would be somewhere between $79.99 and $149.99. The devour looks nice but doesn’t pack quite the same punch as the Motorola Droid. The Devour is rumored to come with the Qualcomm MSM 7627 processor. This is the same processor found in the Palm Pixi and Palm Pixi Plus. The Droid has the OMAP 3 which is also found in the Pre. We have seen a significant difference in performance between Pre and Pixi, so it won’t be surprising to see the same thing here. Here are the specs and features coming on the Motorola Devour:

OS: Android 1.6 with Motoblur (Yes this may mean that the Cliq will get 1.6 soon)

A 3.1″ capacitive touch screen at 320×480 resolution. (Identical to the Pre and iPhone resolutions) No mention of multi-touch yet

Qualcomm MSM 7627 processor clocked at 600Mhz, 256MB of RAM, and a MicroSD slot with an 8GB MicroSD card

3MP camera with digital zoom (most likely 2x)

Side sliding 4 row qwerty keyboard

Optical track pad on the front left corner for navigation

2 microphones, 1 for talk and the other for noise cancellation

So there you have it. If you are a fan of Motoblur and you are on Verizon than the device you’ve been looking for seems to have arrived. This phone looks very nice and we are eager to get our hands on it to check out performance. When we do, you will be the first to know.

The Motorola CLIQ was a prophet, hinting at the future… It told us Schaumburg was coming back to life. It told us that Android was the new lifeblood pulsing through Motorola’s veins. The Motorola Droid was the messiah, securing its title as Motorola’s comeback device!

So what of the CLIQ now? Eclipsed by the Droid a mere 2 months after being born, is it completely irrelevant or is it a worthy phone in its own right? After weeks of requesting a CLIQ review unit (since Mobilize), the people at T-Mobile finally obliged. Better late than never, I guess

Android 1.5, a slower processor, and a smaller screen put the CLIQ square into the “first generation” device category. It features the same form factor as the T-Mobile G1, but with a 5 megapixel camera and a standard audio connector.

Instead of serving standard Android, Motorola decided to use BLUR, a custom user interface, which is unfortunate. I recently wrote:

Frankly, this user interface fragmentation is a shame. Standard Android is fine – just ask the phenomenal Motorola Droid! Why bother with a custom look and feel?

There were all sorts of new devices shown at CES 2010, but only a few brought huge innovation to the table.

Many new 3-D televisions were introduced at CES such as the Panasonic TC-P50 VT25. Now you can watch Avatar 3-D in your living room.

The Motorola Backflip was introduced, It’s a nice cute phone that has unique features like a backflip keyboard and a touchscreen sensor on the back. It runs Android 1.5 and can be upgraded to 2.1. Its price and carrier will be announced at a later date.

Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid is a netbook-like device with a detachable 11.6 in LED tablet screen all in one unit. The screen has a core processor, therefore making it a seperate entity from the laptop when it is detached. You can use the tablet to use touchscreen features when you use certain applications and even use it as an e-book reader. The price is $999.

Tivit Mobile TV Receiver takes air signal and turns it into Wi-Fi so you can watch TV-channels right on your phone when you’re on the go. It is compatible with the iphone, itouch, blackberries, android phones and PCs. It will be available in March and will cost you around $100.

Intel Wireless Display lets you output your computer screen to a larger display via wireless. The product is simply a Netgear box.

The newest Motorola phone might initially look like a Cliq, but the Backflip has a new trick behind it. Literally. You can actually navigate the phone with a finger on the backside of the Motorola Backflip (s mot). Taps and double-taps are supported as is mouse-pad style navigation. In fact, the entire phone has a backwards look and feel to it because the QWERTY keypad flips in the opposite way you’d expect — the keyboard is always exposed as a result.

The display looked vivid, and the keys appear generous in size. But aside from the new navigation method, this largely looks like a modest refresh of the Cliq to me: Android 1.5, 5-megapixel camera, 528 MHz CPU, 3G, Wi-Fi and MOTOBLUR.

On a different note, Motorola’s Sanjay Jha stated that the Cliq would be updated to Android 2.1 (s goog), but no time frame was provided. If that’s the case, I expect the same upgrade to apply to the Backflip. No carrier partners were announced yet, but the price-to-be-determined phone will be sold in the U.S. as well as other countries around the world before April.

Transfer Contacts from Blackberry to Droid

The easiest way to transfer contacts from a blackberry to a Motorola Droid phone is via the GMail contact import feature using a CSV file exported from the Blackberry Desktop Manager. There is one gotcha though; Google does not give you a preview of how the contact data will map, which can have undesirable results!!

Here is the procedure.

Backup your Blackberry data using the BB Desktop Manager.
Export BB contacts to an Excel compatible CSV File. Follow the procedure found here.
Open CSV file in Excel.
Examine data. You want to make sure that the primary phone number is under the heading ‘Mobile Phone’. By default the Blackberry puts phone numbers in ‘Work Phone’. The Google import tool doesn’t know what to do with this. (See image below). Be sure to manipulate the phone data in excel to put contacts primary phone number under the ‘Mobile Phone’ heading.
Click on image to Enlarge
Save the CSV file, be sure to preserve format as CSV. Close the file.
Go to Gmail and open your contacts.
Create a new group to put the imported contacts in.
Choose Import.
Browse the computer to find the CSV file and also check the option to import contacts into the new group. (That way if they come in all goofed up, you can mass delete the group and retry).
Click Import and see how it worked!!

Presumably the procedure is the same for other Android phones.

My mobile phone problems persist. I want an iPhone but I don’t want AT&T. Fortunately there appears to be a light at the end of this tunnel. Unfortunaetly my faith in Apple has been rocked and my eyes are turning to a new champion of the consumer experience…the big, bad, Google.

Despite the latest Droid advertisement belittling the iPhone to a “pretty porcelain princess” figurine, calling its own device a robot that “does”, the truth is that the iPhone does too. AT&T doesn’t. Which begs the question: for a company so hell bent on creating the best user experience possible why now has it chosen to forgo these principles for the sake of control? AT&T is truly the worst.

The Droid is a good phone. The iPhone is a great phone and it’s possible the Google Phone – reportedly being released by Gizmodo and every other tech blog online – will be great too.

Apple has created an incredible ecosystem with Mobile Me. I am able to keep my address book, calendar and files on my computer synced together with my non existant iPhone.

But alas I do not have an iPhone. I have a Blackberry Tour, which by all accounts is a decent phone. Sure, Blackberry Messenger satisfies my inner stalker with “R’s” and “D’s” for read/delivered messages. But decent doesn’t cut it. And the Tour is really my stalemate phone because I have no moves. Google Sync has since come out replicating all the wonderful features of Mobile Me, sans the $99 fee. Which has me taking a notice.

But lets get back to the iPhone and the expectations that Apple has created for itself. They pride themselves on the user’s experience. Microsoft writes its operating system (haphazardly) for dozens of different computer manufactures and it shows. Apple creates its own operating system for its own computers- this too shows. The experience between a Mac and PC do not compare.

Apple revolutionized the way we interact with music with the iconic iPod + iTunes. As a company Apple has moved methodically with great regard to the user experience in every instance except the iPhone. The quality of the service provider (in this case AT&T) has a massive impact on the user experience and the carrier partnership should be scrutinized just as heavily as the number of clicks it takes to get from one menu to the next.

A chain truly is as strong as its weakest link and for whatever reason AT&T is the rotting link on this chain that Apple has bound to the iPhone. So while I appreciate what Apple has done for me, it seems to have side stepped with respect to the iPhone.

I’m now looking for Google to innovate. I have hopes for the Google Phone. The sad thing is the phone my heart..err thumbs yearn for (iPhone) is right in front of me. So while the iPhone is screwing around with that crap carrier I’ve got my eyes open for something better. Maybe Apple will get it’s act together before I lose interest. Maybe not.

One could argue that the Motorola Droid is in fact the first-ever Android-based in-car navigation solution, but we’re surmising that ArcherMind would disagree. Over at the Embedded Technology 2009 trade show in Yokohama, the outfit has demonstrated an Android-laden navigation system that could actually be inserted as a factory option; curiously enough, it looks an awful lot like the AutoLinQ initiative that hit our radar back in June. The outfit is reportedly shopping the system — which includes a 7-inch, 800 x 480 display — to a variety of Chinese automakers, and given that it can browse the web via WiFi or 3G, connect with music players and phones over Bluetooth and even play back audio files stored on the HDD or SD slot, we can’t imagine it being a tough sell.

For some the launch of the highly touted Motorola Droid was underwhelming, for others it went as expected. Feature comparisons aside, one thing is clear. The Droid is a definite competitor for Apple. Perhaps not on the same consumer demand scale but expect to see Android phones consistently cut into the iPhone numbers as the months go on. Lineups? No, but those who did manage to get their hands on the handset have reported positive results. At face value the Motorola Droid is “brick-ish” and heavy, but the target audience for this handset should be more interested in what the phone can do. Perhaps the best Android phone yet, but definitely not the best looking.

Personally I find the Motorola Cliq to be a much more broad appeal when it comes to styling. Hot on the heels of Motorola’s offerings is the LG Eve at a very competitive price point. Expect many more to come.

The estimate that Verizon (s vz) sold 100,000 Droid phones this weekend as part of the Droid onslaught is pretty sweet for Motorola, as is the assumption from Mark McKechnie with Broadpoint AmTech that the cellular provider purchased 200,000 of the handsets from Motorola (s mot) in anticipation of high demand. But the more interesting part of his research note wasn’t the past — it’s the future, namely that he thinks Motorola’s handset business should return to an operating profit next year on the strength of co-CEO’ Sanjay’s Jha’s bet on the Android operating system. From the analyst note:

We estimate each Android unit contributes 4x the gross profit of a feature phone unit and that 10 million Android units will contribute nearly half of the gross profits in MOT’s handset division.

And that profit boost is why Jha is betting on Android — and why the bet must succeed. Motorola doesn’t have any more aces, and consolidation is a real threat for the handset industry. After watching Apple’s (s aapl) iPhone and devices from Research In Motion (s rimm) steal profits from the handset industry, Jha hopes Android offers the winning hand that Motorola needs in order to take some of those profits back.

The macho image in advertising is pretty heavily used for truck commercials, and maybe power tools. They’re low in how functional the product actually is, and high in how much of a he-man you’ll look like using it.

Now I guess the macho image applies to smartphones as well (sorry, “robot phones”). After all, what man looking to overcome his inadequacies wouldn’t be drawn to these:

Crush a rock
Punch a hole through a steel wall
Run apps with axle-greased ease

There’s more, but be warned only Neanderthals need apply.

Male or female, the first thing I look for is a mind at work. I can only hope no more men will be swayed by this crap than women are swayed because a product is pink, or has a mirror. This kind of “macho” advertising makes me ashamed of my gender.

what? new cell phone out?

alright, alright.. i gotta know more. i gotta have it. MUST!

so i’m an iPhone user. i love my iPhone. in fact, it’s saved my life in certain circumstances that other phones just could not ever do. it’s been best friends with me since…. i can’t even remember. i’ve had the pleasure of being gifted 3 iPhones. an 3G 8G, 3G 16G and a second generation iPhone. i have not gotten to obtain the iPhone 3Gs for personal reasons… i feel once i ‘buy’ an iPhone a new one will come out a month later and i would haaaate that.

so enough about iPhone. what is DROID?

Droid is Motorolas smartphone… other phones by Motorola would be the SLVR and the RAZR.

2 phones which wern’t too impressive with me. Infact, I dislike a majority of Motorola phones because they are all about looks and not so much about usability.

So the new ‘DROID’ claims to be everything that the iPhone isn’t…. hard to believe in my opinion. VERY HARD to believe in my opinion… to top an iPhone would be like trying to top God. Unless DROID has devilish tricks up their sleeve….

As long as you’re at the 400 MB/s standard as this is, there’s no need to spend $50 on a gold plated connector and superheavy isolation like the Monster cables. Firewire is designed to function up to 15′ without signal degradation, and unlike analog signals the 0 and 1s of digital signals aren’t subject to manipulation by electrical fields. Either they get through or they don’t, so as long as these are certified under the standard you save money by not buying useless frills. It’s shiny translucent silver, not black, but if you care that much about cable color you probably already have your cables hidden anyway.

The 4 pin models work with most electrical powered devices; the 6 pin models usually are for devices that need battery power. (The extra two pins carry current.) For those looking for an adapter for Comcast/Motorola HDTV-ready digital boxes, this is the cable you need. For some reason Motorola decided to use a 6 pin adapter, where almost all HDTVs and DVHS VCRs use a 4 pin. (PCs typically use 6.) I’ve used one for a while now to run flawless 1080i signals between my Comcast HDTV box and my DVHS VCR. Recommended.

This Belkin 6′ IEEE 1394 cable is a very solid cable, with a male 4-pin (“i.Link”) connector on one end and a male 6-pin (“Firewire”) connector on the other. It supports the full speed (400Mbps) of the IEEE 1394 specification, and looks durable.

You should beware of the no free shipping policy on this cable when sold by Amazon — it does not count toward the $25 free shipping promotion. I used 1-click to order this and was charged close to six bucks for shipping. Ouch. Still, the total was much less than the cheapest price elsewhere, on the web or in stores.

Sigh, this phone is hot.

I’ve read a countless amount of articles on the Motorola Droid, and I’m actually excited for this phone… maybe more excited when I heard the iPhone was coming to Australia? But the amount of features that this phone has over the iPhone is incredible! The cameras better, it has a larger touch screen, it’s fully customizable, it has a physical keyboard!! But there’s so much more.

I’ve had my iPhone for over a year now (I think I have 6 or so months left on my contract) but you have no idea how much I HATE it. I’m not going to even bother to list what I hate about it, but it’s just the iPhone. I love my mac, but hate my iPhone.

I’m really hoping this comes to Australia preferably Vodafone, but why wouldn’t it right?

The T-Grid: Verizon Droid vs. iPhone 3GS

So Verizon’s Droid is official, and officially arriving a week from Friday. I’m smart enough to know it’s pointless to call any phone an iPhone killer, or even a potential iPhone killer–and that competing with the iPhone is much more about software and overall integration than it is about hardware specs. (If you could kill the iPhone through trumping its specs, it would already be a goner.) But the Droid does pack better specs than the iPhone 3GS in many areas–including its screen, which has well over twice as many pixels. It runs the promising Android 2.0 OS. And it’s on a network that doesn’t provoke much in the way of squawking from its customers. In short, it’s the most formidable Google rival since the Palm Pre.

I have a Droid in hand (lent to me by Verizon) and will report in with a hands-on report soon. But as is my wont, I’m going to begin with a features comparison. Note that the information that follows mostly doesn’t take third-party applications and products into account,

HORSHAM, Pa., October. 26, 2009 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Home & Networks Mobility business today announced an innovative implementation of gallium nitride technology that extends the reach of its fiber deep portfolio of optical nodes and RF amplifiers.

With this innovation, Motorola has taken the lead in providing the highest-available RF output levels for cable operators driving fiber deeper into their networks, resulting in as much as a 20-percent reduction of active components in N+1 architectures. By reducing the actives in the network, Motorola allows the operator to lower both capital and operational expenses, while reducing system powering requirements and increasing network reliability.

Cable providers continue to successfully leverage cost-effective fiber deep technologies as they drive fiber deeper into hybrid fiber coax (HFC) networks to deliver higher throughput video and broadband services to their subscribers. By introducing extended reach RF amplification, Motorola makes it even more affordable to deploy fiber deeper in the network by reducing the number of active components and their associated installation and operational costs. Additionally, the new technology minimizes the need for re-spacing amplifiers as operators upgrade to 1 GHz and higher technologies, which provides a significant cost benefit over existing technologies. The Motorola Droid

I am not going to lie. I have not been been down with a Moto product since my beloved Timeport that I dropped in the toilet! (Don’t ask) But from what I heard, the Verizon Droid is the phone to get.

We have been hearing about an iPhone killer since the iPhone first dropped. And needless to say, the iPhone is still alive and kicking. But can the Droid create the much hyped homicide? For starters, it is part of a more superior network, it has a keyboard, a 5 mega-pixel camera, it can multitask, it has speech recognition, it has, it has, it has……. the list seems top be endless.

The phone is dropping next week at a Verizon store near you.

There Really Might Be a Google Phone. No Seriously!

[qi:gigaom_icon_google-android] We’ve gone back and forth on the existence of a Google phone for a long time now. In the beginning, there was a talk of a Google Phone that turned out to be Android, Google’s mobile operating system targeting handset makers such as HTC, Motorola and Samsung. Now there is word that Google might actually be looking to make its own handset. Again! This comes from Ashok Kumar, a veteran technology analyst with Northeast Securities. In a note to his clients, Kumar notes that “Google is expected to launch a self branded -smartphone by year end followed by –netbook (sic) early next year.”

According to Kumar, Google will embed the same iteration of Android as the one currently being used in the Motorola Droid and the device will be based on Qualcomm baseband chips. Google will also introduce its own branded netbook, again embedding Qualcomm Snapdragon, early next year. Acer, one of the largest PC makers in the world, recently said that it would be making an Android-based smartphone and a netbook.

About six months ago, I heard that Google had been extremely conflicted over its desire to make a Google phone. I’ve spoken to some of my sources, who have indicated that Google wants to do its own phone in order to better integrate its services. But at the same time it didn’t want to tee off its partners.

It would be a very curious move for Google, considering that Android is finally building up the momentum it needs to take on more established rivals such as RIM, Nokia (s NOK) and Apple. The decision to make its own branded device would certainly sow seeds of dissension in the Android camp. Already there are fears of too many flavors of Android causing confusion in the market. The handset makers who are betting the farm on Android, Motorola (s MOT) for instance, must feel double-crossed.

My view is that even if Google makes this device, success isn’t assured. Google, for all its success in online advertising and search, has yet to prove that it can build a product-centric infrastructure like, say, Microsoft (s MSFT) and Apple. Google, in fact, would be fighting its own corporate structure.

The Droid Phone Gets Marketing -- But Is That Enough to Combat the iPhone?

Verizon Wireless, just days after announcing a far-reaching deal with Google to collaborate on Android smartphones and services (GigaOM Pro, sub. req’d), over the weekend put up a web site touting what it’s positioning as an iPhone slayer: the Droid phone. It was buttressed by a TV ad, which puts the Droid’s launch date in November. Indeed, the trifecta of Google, Verizon and Motorola mean this device will have heavy-duty, pointed marketing behind it. But will that be enough to give the iPhone a run for its money?

Specifications for the Droid phone were laid out on the web site. It will have:

Android 2.0, a significant overhaul of the open-source operating system, with user interface improvements including the advanced use of widgets
A 5-megapixel camera
Speech recognition capabilities
Advanced multitasking
A full QWERTY keyboard
Interchangeable batteries

It may also run the TI OMAP3430, according to The Washington Post, the core of both the iPhone and the Palm Pre. Most existing Android phones run the slower Qualcomm 528MHz ARM11.

It’s easy to see from the marketing spin being put on the Droid that it’s very directly aimed at competing with the iPhone. Both the site and the TV ad are peppered with a series of swipes at the Apple device, including “iDon’t have a keyboard,” “iDon’t have interchangeable batteries,” iDon’t run simultaneous apps,” and “iDon’t allow open development.”

Let’s not forget the enormity of the iPhone’s momentum, though. Apple said this afternoon that it sold 7.4 million iPhones in its most recent fiscal quarter, 7 percent more than the same three-month period a year earlier and 43 percent more on a sequential basis. To win against the iPhone, the Droid phone needs:

Outstanding hardware
Great apps, and a hot app store
A solid network
Brilliant marketing

The Droid phone is already getting an exceptionally rare level of marketing for an open source-based device. As we’ve noted numerous times over on the open source-focused OStatic blog, many open source platforms, including Linux (which Android is based on) suffer from lack of marketing. That’s often the case because open-source platforms become forked and fragmented, and no well-funded single entity puts marketing dollars behind them. As Joe Brockmeier, community manager for Novell’s OpenSUSE Linux and noted open source pundit, noted in a post last year:

“If you took the marketing budgets of all the Linux vendors combined, and then doubled that figure, and then added a zero, you might start approaching what Microsoft spends on marketing Windows. Maybe.”

So all the marketing may give Droid some oomph compared to other open-source launches. Whether it can convince smartphone buyers to forgo an iPhone, however, remains to be seen.

Well, my guess is that it has something to do with providing surveillance data for this SEAS World Sim thing, and that individual Americans are being watched and potentially targeted with it. Tice’s background seems to involve a lot of traditional electronic warfare, radar and ELINT stuff. Maybe Tice’s deal involved the collection of the mobile phone GPS and/or triangulation data which would provide realtime spacial/geographic data to the SEAS system. In other words, SEAS sees you. They could bring up a map of a city and plot your path based on the information that your phone is exchanging with the mobile network.

Researchers from Georgia Tech have devised methods to take real-time, real-world information and layer it onto Google Earth, adding dynamic information to the previously sterile Googlescape.

They use live video feeds (sometimes from many angles) to find the position and motion of various objects, which they then combine with behavioral simulations to produce real-time animations for Google Earth or Microsoft Virtual Earth.

They use motion capture data to help their animated humans move realistically, and were able to extrapolate cars’ motion throughout an entire stretch of road from just a few spotty camera angles.

From their video of an augmented virtual Earth, you can see if the pickup soccer game in the park is short a player, how traffic is on the highway, and how fast the wind is blowing the clouds across the sky.

Up next, they say they want to add weather, birds, and motion in rivers.

Motorola Taps Nero For Android Syncing

The Motorola Cliq is going to be a highly-sought device when it’s released later this year, but we haven’t heard about how users will manage and sync their multimedia files. Motorola said Friday it has tapped Nero to craft its desktop media software, and, from what I’ve seen, it looks pretty good.

A lot of the appeal of the Android operating system is being able to do much of the syncing and management over the air, as the G1 and myTouch 3G simply have you punch in your Google account information and all your contacts and calendars are auto-magically brought to the phone. Nero said OTA has its role, which will grow significantly over the next few year, but it’s not the right setting for transferring music or videos. Motorola will be using Nero’s software for its Media Link software, which will enable users to manage their multimedia files with the Cliq and other Moto phones.

The user interface is about what you’d expect from this type of software, and it was easy to import, find, mange, and make playlists from your files. There was a cool little ringtone maker that was simple to use, and you can purchase songs from Amazon’s MP3 store within the software. Media Link also makes it simple to get photos off your phone, and there are also basic photo-editing tools for cropping, rotating, red-eye reduction, and more. There’s some social networking integration as well, but I thought the latest Real Player software was a bit stronger on this front.

Videos can be transferred with the Media Link software as well, but if you want the really good stuff like automatic transcoding for the best resolution and screen size, you’ll have to pony up $39.99 for the premium version. The premium version also includes calendar and contact synching, but Android is pretty adept already at that over the air.

Of course, the major problem for companies like Research In Motion, Palm, and Motorola is that the iTunes ecosystem is so strong, and many smartphone users already have much of their media tied into Apple’s software. Media Link does enable users to import playlists from iTunes, as well as Windows Media Player, so that’s a step in the right direction. RIM has essentially ceded the heavy lifting of multimedia syncing to iTunes with the Media Sync Software and Palm has also been fighting hard to enable its webOS customers to use Apple’s software, but there should be a growing market for alternative mobile media management programs. I think iTunes is pretty bloated and a chore to use on Windows, so here’s hoping something like Media Link can take off.

A new tech wizard is fighting to return the ailing cellphone maker to relevance with a slate of new phones–and help from Google.

It’s been more than a year Sanjay Jha left wireless chip maker Qualcomm (QCOM) to come to Motorola (MOT). As co-CEO of Motorola (along with Greg Brown), he took on a task even the private equity firms had passed on: saving the iconic handset division. Just as he began to realize the severity of the company’s situation, the market crashed—and everything got even harder. Jha stripped $1.4 billion from the budget and doubled down on a new strategy to hitch the company’s wagon to Google (GOOG), building a series of smartphones powered by the Android operating system. Kudelski Group Jumps on the Intel Bandwagon Selling DRM Licenses

Intel’s New IPTV SoC for the Digital Home: In announcing their new IPTV SoC, Eric Kim, Senior VP and GM, Intel Digital Home Group said, “At the center of the TV evolution is the CE4100 media processor, a new architecture that meets the critical requirements for connected CE devices.” then followed up by saying: “This is the tip of the iceberg. With widgets and Flash on the TV you’ll see a similar effect to that which we saw with smartphones.”

Adobe Flash Player 10 Port: According to their latest press release, Intel is working with Adobe to port Adobe Flash Player 10 to the family of Intel CE media processors to optimize the playback of graphics and H.264 video to enable for the first time a wide array of Flash-based content on the television. “As TVs become more interactive, Adobe Flash is an important enabling technology to help content developers blend together video, 3-D animation and rich graphics.”

Widgets = The Next Killer App? The combination of a capable processor and interactive Flash widgets could spark a growing subset of TV-specific apps for accessing premium content, games, music, and the web. Intel wants developers to target the new chip and use it in conjunction with Flash, which Adobe is making easier to use on such devices.

CBS Extols the Virtue of TV Widgets and Interactive TV Applications: Broadcast networks such as CBS are exploring TV widgets to help their viewers find and connect to premium content. “Navigation is the No. 1 challenge for today’s television viewers,” said George Schweitzer, president, CBS Marketing. “Intel’s CE technology and our new TV Widget platform are designed to help people find the shows they want and discover new programs that are relevant to their interests. What’s more, the TV Widget gives us another platform to connect and interact with our audience while delivering an exciting new television experience.”

Kudelski Licenses DRM to Intel: Nagravision, a Kudelski Group company, announced they have signed a technology licensing agreement with Intel on Sept. 25. According to the release, the agreement will see compatibility between Nagravision’s NOCS technology and Intel’s CE media processors, allowing Intel’s CE industrial customers to design hybrid IPTV set-top boxes and secure digital video home products for service operators.

Devices licenses sold through Intel is a very smart move for Kudelski. There are lots of choices for DRM and chips. Having your DRM already coded into a SoC is a sure way of reaching a much larger audience with a better known brand name.

Intel Still Needs to Make the Sales: Even with this stellar lineup of partners and features, Intel still must make the case that they can beat Broadcom, Motorola, NXP, ST, Sigma, TI and a host of fabless semiconductor houses in an IPTV market which is getting very crowded.

Time to Market is the Name of the Game: If all SoC offerings are perceived as having a similar suite of features, then it comes down to service, price, and availability. As most of us know, press releases and marketing hype fall flat if working production units with debugged software are not available for building your CE prototypes and conducting your lab trials.

CNBC Interview with Motorola CEO

Sanjay Jah, co-CEO of Motorola recently did an interview with CNBC on their recent announcement of the Motorola CLIQ. He talks of Motorola’s new MOTOBLUR interface which features some very impressive social-networking integration directly on the home screen. The CLIQ is supposed to be released in October on T-Mobile. I just found this leak, however, that shows the CLIQ being released in November, so we’ll see what happens.

Now, I won’t support claims that this move is Motorola’s way of selling their company, because simply enough, I don’t see it. Judge for yourself here.

General Electric filled out its offshore wind turbine portfolio by buying ScanWind, which makes direct-drive turbine components. GE on Monday said that it has completed the acquisition, which was valued at a about $18.5 million. How-to: Tired of waiting for Android 2.1? Install Bugless Beast v0.7.5!

You’re tired of waiting. I’m tired of waiting. We’re ALL tired of waiting for Motorola and Verizon to get their game in gear and release Android 2.1 already. Fed up with Motorola after the latest emotional roller-coaster they took the media world on, I took a dive into the realm of Android rom cooking. Results? A Droid running at 1GHz, with all of the fancy shmancy 2.1 applications (Media Gallery, etc), full Superuser permissions (rooted), and a slick smoked glass theme.

First and foremost, disclaimer time. Neither myself, nor FoneFrenzy.com, provides ANY SORT OF GUARANTEE what you will not BRICK YOUR PHONE. You’ve been warned, don’t come crying to us when your fancy Motorola Droid has turned into a $600 paper-weight. On that note though, the process is relatively simple, if not a little long. Screwing it up would be hard. Follow the steps below and ENJOY! All credit to below quoted text goes to Matth3w over at DROIDforums.

In this guide we will be covering the following topics in order:

1. Rooting your Droid.

2. Flashing and installing SPRecovery.

3. Backing up your Droid using Nandroid.

4. Installing Bugless Beast.

5. Overclocking. (optional)

6. Monitoring Temps. (optional)

7. Installing WiFi tethering. (optional)

8. Fixing map updates. (if needed)

9. Patching the stock theme if so desired. (optional)

10. Fixing an issue with Facebook (if needed)

The first 30 or so steps I am stealing from this thread (some of which are slightly to heavily modified), with credit given to cplus. So this is me giving credit where credit is due. But you don’t need that thread to install Bugless Beast anymore, because I’m going to show you all right here. So don’t navigate to that topic and get all confused.

The current version of Bugless Beast is v0.7.5 dated 2/9/2010. I will update this thread every time Pete from AllDroid releases a new version. Changes from the previous version can always be found here, in his official thread.

*** Note *** If you are already rooted and simply want to install this ROM, skip to step 9. If you are installing OVER a previous version of Bugless Beast, skip to step 34. If you have no clue what I am talking about, start from step 1. This will also not work if you have a 2.1 ROM of some sort installed. Pete’s Bugless Beast is NOT a 2.1 ROM, so if you have a previous version of this, you are fine to continue. It has some elements from 2.1, but it is not an actual 2.1 ROM. THIS LAST STATEMENT DOES NOT APPLY TO 2.1 APPS ONLY SUCH AS GALLERY, ETC…ONLY 2.1 FULL REPLACEMENT ROMS! If you only have 2.1 apps this installation method will work.

Another note: If you go to download any of the files and get a bunch of BS characters, just simply right-click, save as. Don’t just click.

First thing we will do, is root the Droid.

If you are coming from Sholes ROM, or if you are having problems right now as it stands (locking, rebooting, etc), I would HIGHLY suggest wiping your phone completely to stock before you begin so it’s easier to tell where your problems are coming from. If you have no idea what I’m talking about or you aren’t having problems just go on.

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS WITH A LOW BATTERY. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD CHARGE.

1. Download the file update.zip from here. This file should be ABOUT 10.6MB, if it’s something super small like 240kb you need to download the file. Make sure the file is named update.zip by right clicking the file in Windows Explorer, and choosing properties. The top empty box it will say update.zip. If it says update.zip.zip you will not be able to root your Droid – it will say “file not found” or something to that effect. This update.zip is for rooting your Droid. So make sure you use THIS particular link in this step for the first update.zip (you will see later that the actual ROM is also called update.zip as well) or it won’t work. Very important.

2. Plug your phone into the computer using the USB cable. From the notification menu at the top of the phone, slide that down and click the “USB Connected” button. Choose “Mount.” Copy ‘update.zip’ from your computer to the root of your phone’s sdcard. The root of your sdcard means the base, like C:\. If you are unsure of what root means, PLEASE go back to the “Please read before you try to root” thread that I linked above. This is VERY important!!! Disconnect the phone from the computer.

3. Turn off phone.

4. While the phone is off, slide open the keyboard.

5. Hold down ‘x’ and then begin to hold down the power button at the same time. When the screen lights up, you can let go of the buttons. You will now be booted to a screen with an exclamation point in the middle.. Sort of like this /!\. This is the STOCK recovery menu.

6. Press the ‘volume +’ and ‘camera’ buttons together until you see the screen change to a menu.

7. Choose the option to ‘run update.zip.’ Wait for finish… This update gives you super user or ‘root’ access to the phones internal drive and filesystem. If you stopped here, you would simply have a ‘rooted’ phone.

8. Reboot phone. When it boots back up, check to see if you have a ninja icon that says “Superuser Permissions” in your app drawer. If you do not have this, DO NOT CONTINUE UNTIL YOU HAVE THIS ICON, it will be pointless to continue if you don’t have this.Superuser Permissions is sort of like having Administrator access on your home computer. Without it, there are many things you can’t do.

Next thing we will do is flash the phone and install SPRecovery.

9. Go to Android Market and install ‘Android Terminal Emulator.’ It’s free. Not Terminal Emulator, not Better Terminal Emulator. Android Terminal Emulator. It’s by Jack Palevich. The program will show up as simply “Terminal Emulator” once you install it.

10. Download the file flash_image from here. This file should NOT have a file extension!!! Make sure it does not have a file extension of ANY TYPE!!! If you or your computer have added a file extension (some users have reported that their computer added a .txt at the end of the file) it will not work! If you go to download this file and Vista puts a .txt extension on it, simply remove the file extension. Again, you can double check to see what, if any, file extension it has by right clicking the file and choosing properties.

11. Copy ‘flash_image’ from your computer to the root of your sdcard. Again, if you don’t know what the root of your SD card is, please go back to the beginning of this thread.

12. Download the newest version of SPRecovery from Sholes.info here, and copy it to the root of your SD card. Disconnect the phone from the USB cable.

13. Open ‘Android Terminal Emulator.’ (In the launcher, you will see it is simply called ‘Terminal Emulator’.) You will now see a blue screen with command prompt.For those of you only familiar with Windows-based machines, this is very similar to a command or DOS prompt, where you have to manually type in commands instead of clicking on a pretty icon to do all your dirty work.

14. Slide open the keyboard and type ’su’ then press ‘enter’. You will be prompted to press ‘Allow’. Press ‘Allow’ (and don’t forget to check the remember check box). This grants you Superuser Permissions while in Terminal Emulator, or the equivalent as right click > run as administrator in Windows.Your command prompt should change from $ to # to let you know it worked. If it didn’t, stop right now because something did not install properly.

15. Type ‘mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system’ without the quotes. This will make the phone’s internal drive writable so that we can copy files to it from the sdcard in the next step. For everything you type in Terminal Emulator you need to make sure you copy EVERYTHING exactly as you see it. Also, remember to hit ENTER at the end of each line. Enter is located RIGHT BELOW the delete key, it is NOT the gold button in the center of the directional pad. It should also be noted that the ‘o’ is a lower case “oh” NOT a zero. Don’t forget the space between ‘mtdblock4′ and ‘/system’ or you will get an error!!!

16. Type ‘dd if=/sdcard/flash_image of=/system/bin/flash_image’ without the quotes. It will tell you how many bytes in/out. This copies the flash_image utility to the phones internal drive where we need it. That is all one line…

17. Type ‘chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image’. This changes the permissions of flash_image so that we can use it.

18. Type ’sync’.

19. Type ‘/system/bin/flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-0.99.3.img’. It should be noted that this command is all on one line, not two separate commands.There should be a short pause as the custom recovery image is flashed and then the command prompt will appear again. At this point, the stock recovery screen has now been replaced by the one you will see in steps later on. This recovery image was written by SirPsycoS and is shared by him at sholes.info.

20. Type ‘mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p /system/recovery-from-boot.old’. This should prevent the custom recovery from being over-written on reboot. If this step doesn’t work for you, skip it. I’ve haven’t witnessed the problem that it is supposed to prevent. bernal125 skipped it without issue. For others, this step has worked without issue.

21. Type ’sync’.

22. Close ‘Android Terminal Emulator.’ Go the Market and hit menu > Downloads and update EVERY app that you have installed, ESPECIALLY Google Maps. By doing this, you ensure that you have all your programs updated before you make a backup. Additionally, I use MyBackupPro in ADDITION to using the backup method in the following steps. It’s a paid app, but it also backs up system settings, etc.

23. Download virginoem-backup.zip . Going back on your computer, extract ‘virginoem-backup.zip’ so that have you have folder called ‘virginoem-backup’ with the contents resembling ‘boot.img’ ‘cach.tar’ ‘data.tar’ etc… this is a backup that will get you back to stock (stock as in, you just bought the phone, not as in where you are now) in the event that you need to.

24. Create a folder on the root of your sdcard called ‘nandroid’. This folder stores all of your backups that you make so you can choose from them and restore using the recovery screen at a later date.

25. Copy the folder ‘virginoem-backup’ from your computer to the ‘nandroid’ folder you just created on your sdcard in step 24. Unplug the USB.

26. Power off the phone.

Now we will backup your phone’s current state in the event that something goes wrong with the installation.

27. Hold ‘x’ and power button to boot into recovery as in step 5 above. You won’t get the exclamation point this time. Rather you will be booted right into the recovery.

28. READ THE RED COLORED TEXT SO THAT YOU KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE THE MENU.

29. Choose ‘backup/restore’.

30. Choose ‘Advanced Nandroid backup’.

31. Choose ‘Set backup name’.

32. Type a descriptive name for your backup and press enter. For example, I always make mine something like: BuglessBeastOne, BuglessBeastTwo, etc.

33. Choose ‘Perform backup’. The chances of you screwing something up without specifically trying to are pretty slim, but we are going to do this just to be sure. An image of your phone’s current state will now be made. It will take a couple minutes. With this backup you can always revert back if you don’t like the ROM. Keep in mind if you revert back to this image, you will still be rooted with sprecovery. Also keep in mind that you can redo steps 29-33 to do a complete back up of your phone ANY TIME you want.

Now you are rooted with SPRecovery, you are backed up with Nandroid, and you are ready to install Bugless Beast. When installing Bugless Beast, you will NOT lose your applications, contacts, shortcuts, etc by using the method I am about to show you…reboot the phone by hitting the power button one press at a time until you are back to the main recovery menu, then hit reboot system. When it loads into the operating system go ahead and plug in your USB and mount your SD card.

The moment you’ve been waiting for…Installing Bugless Beast…

34. Delete the previous update.zip file both from your computer and the root of your SD card to prevent confusion, if it is still there…if you don’t feel like deleting the old version just overwrite the existing file but make sure this next file overwrites or replaces the old update.zip that we used to root your phone. Download the Bugless Beast ROM here. Note that it is the same file name as the update.zip that rooted your phone. Make sure, once again, that your file is named update.zip, not update.zip.zip (as before). This file should be ABOUT 70MB.

35. Just like in step 2, put the update.zip file on the root of your SD card then unplug the phone when you are done.

36. Power off the phone.

37. Reboot into SPRecovery by powering on the phone and holding in the X key on the hardware keyboard, just like you did before.

38. Choose install.

39. Choose allow update.zip installation. Don’t forget this step. If you do, you will get “installation blocked” or something to that effect. This is the feature that prevent OTA updates from being able to be installed to your phone. In the future, if you want to accept a Google update for you phone you will need to download the file, then boot into this menu, and hit “allow update.zip installation” or it won’t work.

40. Choose Install /sdcard/update.zip (deprecated). Deprecated is a software developer’s term that means “something that should not be used or is dangerous to use and recommended against”. Obviously we want to use this update.zip, so in this case, think of the term deprecated as a warning…as in “Are you sure you want to overwrite your current OS?” It’s perfectly safe to complete this step, but many people do not know what this word means.

41. Hit the power button once, and then choose reboot.

42. Enjoy your new ROM. One thing I do if I have any issues at first is a) wait a few minutes to let it start up for the first time, and b) dial *228 and choose option 2 to have the phone reset roaming capabilities.

If you want to overclock your phone, continue…otherwise skip to step 46.

43. Download SetCPU from the Market. When this app asks you if you want to allow or deny just hit allow and check the box to remember that choice.

44. When it asks what device you are using, do NOT choose Droid, scroll all the way towards the bottom choose “auto detect”. If for some reason you are STILL having issues, try unchecking all of the profiles and rechecking them, as well as moving the slider bar on the main SetCPU screen.

45. You can now overclock your droid to 1000mHz (1gHz) at all times, or you can set certain conditions by going to profiles > enable profiles and then setting the conditions and checkmarks for the various profiles you want to use. Next we are going to show you how to monitor temps while overclocking. If you don’t care about this, skip to step 47.

46. The software you need is called Temp Monitor, and it costs $1.99 on the Market. It’s pretty simple to set up, so we didn’t necessarily need a whole section for it…but what the heck, people ask constantly about it…so there you go.

If you want to WiFi tether, keep going, otherwise skip to step 52

47. If you want to WiFi tether, download the apk file from here. Put it somewhere on your SD Card. Personally I have a folder called APK on my SD Card so I know where they all are, but I’m OCD.

48. You can either download Astro File Manager (free, not a bad program) from the market or Root Explorer (paid app, much better).

49. Make sure under settings > applications you have “use unsigned applications” or whatever it says. Top box. It will give you a warning but just ignore it.

50. Navigate to the file you just downloaded and click it. Do not explore the file in Astro, but choose open and install. In Root Explorer just choose install.

51. My settings for WiFi tether are…turn on WiFi, uncheck use Bluetooth, check Enable WiFi Encryption, set up a passphrase (make sure it is 13 characters), change the SSID or leave it default (I left it default), Change channel to 07, power mode active, enable access control unchecked (my preference), change LAN first option, everything else left it the way it was.

The next step is to fix the map updates.

52. Go here and download yet another update.zip.

53. Just like before you are going to either remove or overwrite the update.zip on the root of your SD Card with this one.

54. Follow steps 34 to 41. This file should fix any force closes or non-GPS updating map related problems.

If you don’t like the look of the Smoked Glass theme…keep going, otherwise, skip to step 58

55. Go here and download yet another update.zip.

56. Just like before you are going to either remove or overwrite the update.zip on the root of your SD Card with this one.

57. Follow steps 34 to 41. This file will give you the OEM theme instead of the Smoked Glass that comes with BB.

Now we are going to fix a problem IF you have the issue with the phone rebooting when going into Accounts & Sync

58. If your phone reboots when you go into Accounts and Sync in the settings menu, go to the Market and download Facebook for Android and that should solve the problem.

Google Maps had an update today, low and behold. Multi-touch! You can head on down to the Android Market and download the latest version of Google Maps, version 3.40, and get busy with your pinch and zoom. The update also added some of the new features to the maps application seen on the Droid. Now this is a far cry from the Android 2.1 update 1 version the Nexus has, but any multi-touch is better than no multi-touch. Though I am seeing many people growing more frustrated lately that their brand new Droid, or brand new Moment, don’t have Android 2.1. What gives Google? Yeah get it out there for us all so we can be happy, thanks! ^^ Here’s a sample of the multi-touch on the Droid in action.
